How many cards do you really need in your wallet?
March 13, 2026 by DARAKO Team
Short Answer: 6 to 9 cards are enough for 95% of people
When you open your wallet, it’s probably full of cards, half of which you haven’t used in months. We’ve gone through the card stacks of over a hundred DARAKO customers during consulting sessions. The result is clear: Most people carry twice as many cards as they need.
In this article, we’ll show you which cards truly belong in your wallet, which are just taking up space – and how you can reduce your wallet from 14 cards to 8 in less than 10 minutes, without missing anything in your daily life.
The 8 cards that truly belong in your wallet
Here’s our honest list, sorted by importance:
1. Your primary payment card (EC or debit card)
Your primary card for everyday use. Contactless-enabled, linked to a checking account. For 90% of all payments in Germany, this one card is sufficient.
2. A credit card
For online purchases, hotel bookings, car rentals, travel. Visa or Mastercard, depending on what your bank issues. One is enough – keep the second one safe at home.
3. ID card
Mandatory ID in Germany. Must be carried – period. If your wallet has enough space, yes.
4. Driver's license
If you drive. The new EU driver's licenses in credit card format fit into any slim wallet.
5. Health insurance card
For doctor's visits, pharmacy, emergencies. Everyone should have one.
6. One supermarket loyalty card (that you actually use)
Payback, DeutschlandCard, Ikea Family, or the card from your main supermarket chain. Not five. One. Digital alternatives (app) significantly reduce the quantity here.
7. A fuel card or public transport card
If you drive: Shell, Aral, or ADAC card. If you use public transport: Deutschlandticket chip card or annual pass. One of them, depending on your daily routine.
8. A backup payment card
If card 1 is lost or the terminal doesn't accept it: a second debit or credit card. Ideally from a different network (e.g., Maestro + Visa).
That makes a total of 8 cards. Plus a few bills, a few coins, and you're good to go.
The cards you can remove (and won't miss anything)
Now for the painful but crucial part:
Gym membership card
Almost all gyms recognize you by name or have an app with a QR code. You can leave the physical card at home – it will probably get lost when you're changing anyway.
More than 2 supermarket loyalty cards
Payback and DeutschlandCard together cover 80% of German supermarkets. Everything else: use the app. Most chains now have apps with digital barcodes.
Business cards and discount coupons
Loyalty stamp cards from the baker, hairdresser coupons, "tenth time free" cards. These end up costing you more time than they save. Honestly: throw them away or digitize them.
Old library cards, hotel cards, access cards
Expired? Gone. One-time hotel stay? Gone. Company access card from your last job? Gone.
More than one credit or debit card per network
Two Visa cards are redundant. One Visa + one Mastercard, however, is sensible – that's your fallback insurance at the checkout.
Health cards from supplementary insurance
Few doctors require them. You have the policy number in the app or can call them in an emergency.
The "Wallet Audit" in 4 steps
Try it now: Take your current wallet and go through it.
- Everything on the table. Every card, every note, every coin.
- Form three piles: "I use weekly" / "I use monthly" / "I rarely use".
- Completely remove pile 3. Expired cards in the trash, the others in a drawer at home.
- Check pile 2: Is there an app alternative? Then digitize it, send the physical card home.
You'll notice: What remains are usually 6 to 9 cards. Exactly the number for which modern slim wallets are optimized.
Why many cards are a real everyday problem
Too many cards cost you time, nerves, and money:
- Time: You search longer at the checkout. Accumulated over a year: several hours.
- Nerves: A cluttered wallet is a small stress factor every day.
- Money: Annual fees for rarely used credit cards quickly add up to €50–150 – for services you don't need.
- Security: If lost, you have to block each card individually. Fewer cards = less panic in an emergency.
Slim wallet and card payment: the right combination
If your card count has dropped to 6–9, a slim wallet is the logical consequence. Classic wallets are designed for 12+ cards plus receipts – if you only have 8 cards, 80% of the volume is empty.
An overview of our models:
- Prime Wallet – 11 cards, 15 bills, coin pocket. Ideal if you want a buffer for 2–3 extra cards.
- Future Wallet – 11 cards, 10 bills, coin pocket. Lower price, same card capacity.
- Smart Wallet – 11 cards, 10 bills, AirTag compartment. If you tend to misplace your wallet.
What do I do with the "rarely used cards"?
Three options:
- Store them at home. In a small box, sorted. Ready to hand, but not always with you.
- Digitize them. Many loyalty cards work via app or Apple Wallet / Google Wallet.
- Cancel them. If you haven't used a card in 12 months – do you need it?
Conclusion: Less is noticeably more
The question "How many cards do I need in my wallet?" is ultimately a question of honesty. 6 to 9 cards are perfectly sufficient for 95% of all people. Anything beyond that is emotional baggage, not functional benefit.
Do the wallet audit today. Three minutes later, you'll know which slim wallet suits you – and your daily life will be noticeably more relaxed due to an invisible factor.
